Rockstar Games will let players upgrade their PlayStation 4 or digital Xbox One copy of Grand Theft Auto V to the current-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions at no cost, just weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives.

Starting June 18, anyone who owns GTA V on PS4 or the digital edition on Xbox One can claim the free upgrade. Physical Xbox One copies do not qualify. The move means players won’t need to spend up to $39.99 for a brand-new edition or pay an upgrade fee to experience the enhanced performance and visuals on newer consoles.

A strategic move ahead of GTA VI

Rockstar announced the free upgrade as part of a regular update to GTA Online, which will also introduce new heist locations at the Kortz Center in July. The timing is strategic: it arrives shortly before the expected launch of GTA VI, giving players a chance to refresh their access to GTA Online—still the game’s main revenue driver—on modern hardware without extra cost.

What this means for players

Existing owners should watch their inbox or the Rockstar Games Launcher for an upgrade prompt. Those on older consoles or physical Xbox One discs will need to purchase the current-gen edition to join in. With no fee required, Rockstar is removing a common barrier to entry for players looking to keep their GTA experience up to date before the next major release.
