A new free web tool from Tokyo-based Sakana AI promises sharper translations between Japanese, English, and Chinese by focusing on context and cultural specifics rather than literal word swaps. Called Sakana Translate, the browser-based service runs on the company’s Namazu model series, adapted for Japanese language and nuance.

Sakana AI frames the offering as “deep translation for Japan,” going beyond simple sentence conversion. The tool is designed to preserve tone, register, and culturally specific elements like business honorifics or internet slang—areas where general translation services often fall short.

Three ways to use it, one account needed

Sakana Translate bundles three modes into one interface. The Translate mode converts pasted text up to roughly 5,000 Japanese characters with streaming output and automatic history. Proofread refines drafts by highlighting changes inline and adjusting tone, politeness, or formality. Ask lets users pose follow-up questions about a translation to clarify nuance or grammar within the same context. All three modes are unlocked with a single free account and can be tried in an interactive demo.

Powered by Namazu, built for efficiency

Namazu is Sakana AI’s Japan-focused model series, created by applying further post-training to existing open-weight foundation models such as DeepSeek-V3.1-Terminus and Llama 3.1 405B. By tuning rather than training from scratch, Sakana AI keeps costs down while tailoring the model to Japanese language patterns and cultural cues. The Namazu series was first announced in March 2026, and Sakana Translate applies the same adaptation to translation tasks.

While detailed benchmark scores aren’t included in the announcement, Sakana AI says it evaluated translation quality using XCOMET-XL on the WMT 2024 General Translation task data—standard industry tests that compare systems across multiple language pairs and domains.
