Shell is considering integrating artificial intelligence (AI) agents to automate predictive maintenance. These agents will be integrated within the C3 Reliability Suite, which oversees more than 30,000 critical pieces of equipment in oil and gas operations.

Shell aims to move beyond simple anomaly detection to autonomous agencies that intervene by detecting unusual signals and analyzing their causes to generate precise work requests, confirm availability of parts, and place purchase orders. The C3 AI team will help Shell transition from a basic diagnostic approach to an integrated one. These agents will also incorporate predictive maintenance using structured sensor data with financial and logistics context to learn specific equipment operation norms.

The deployment of these independent agents will allow Shell to optimize resource utilization by avoiding unnecessary interruptions and focusing its efforts on systems that require regular maintenance.
