Cohere has launched Parse v5.0, a 2.3-billion-parameter vision-language model that converts PDFs, PowerPoints and JPEG pages into structured Markdown in a single step. With an 8,192-token context window and a ~4.6 GB footprint, the model ingests base64-encoded pages and returns clean Markdown that preserves reading order, tables rendered as HTML, lists, form key-value pairs, image descriptions and bounding boxes—no separate OCR stage required.
Built for scale, priced for pragmatism
Priced at $1.50 per 1,000 pages, Parse is positioned on price-performance rather than peak accuracy. Cohere cites a ParseBench score of 79.2, which averages three of the benchmark’s five dimensions—tables, content faithfulness and semantic formatting—placing it ahead of Mistral OCR 4 (74.5), Azure Document Intelligence (74.3) and Databricks AI Parse (72.4). The company notes that ParseBench measures ~2,078 human-verified enterprise pages, but drops charts and visual grounding, two areas where many parsers struggle.
Deployment choices that fit different needs
Parse is generally available through the Cohere Parse API, Microsoft Foundry, AWS SageMaker and single-tenant Model Vault. A free trial key is available for teams running existing RAG stacks, while large enterprises with residency or air-gap requirements can deploy privately. Cohere targets document-heavy verticals—financial services, insurance, healthcare, life sciences, public sector, telecom, energy and manufacturing—where scanned forms and dense tables are common.
Two output modes for different workflows
By default, Parse returns a Markdown string per page. Switching to output_format="blocks" delivers typed blocks with table HTML, bounding boxes and descriptions, enabling citation-level traceability. Supported languages include Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, with zero-shot coverage elsewhere.
